IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) skin rejuvenation is a popular treatment for improving skin tone and texture, but proper aftercare is crucial for optimal results and to prevent side effects. Here’s what you need to know about IPL aftercare:
Immediately After Your IPL Treatment
You might experience some mild redness (erythema) and slight swelling (oedema) in the treated area. This is normal and typically subsides within a couple of hours, though redness can sometimes last for 2-3 days. Your skin may also feel like it’s been sunburnt, or pleasantly warm. If you experience mild swelling or hives, especially under the eyes, a cool compress and antihistamines (taken as directed) can help, and these symptoms usually resolve within 48 hours.
To enhance your comfort, your clinician may apply a cooling method immediately after the treatment, such as cold gel packs, and will also apply a post-treatment cooling and comforting emulsion along with immediate UV protection.
What to Expect with Targeted Areas
- Pigmentation: Any dark spots or pigmentation targeted during your treatment will likely appear darker immediately and over the first few days. Don’t worry, this is part of the process! This superficial darkened pigment will then flake off and gently dissolve like dry skin within 7-10 days.
- Vessels/Redness: Treated blood vessels may look darker for up to 48 hours, or even appear as a small bruise, before fading over the next 7 days. If general redness was treated, you might notice mild superficial swelling and hives for up to 48 hours.
Important Aftercare Instructions
To maximize the benefits of your IPL treatment and aid in recovery, please follow these guidelines:
- Makeup: You can apply makeup after treatment if your skin isn’t irritated.
- Sun Exposure: Avoid direct sun exposure as much as possible to reduce the risk of hyperpigmentation (darker pigmentation).
- Touching Treated Skin: Do NOT pick, scratch, or aggressively exfoliate the treated area for several days. This includes avoiding any harsh acids or exfoliants.
- Exercise: Steer clear of strenuous exercise for 48 hours after your treatment.
- Heat Exposure: For the day of your treatment, avoid spas, saunas, and hot showers. Try to remain indoors in a clean, cool environment, and stay hydrated. Keeping your head elevated can also be helpful.
- Sunscreen: Apply a quality SPF 30+ sunscreen every day throughout your treatment course. Look for a broad-spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide (UVA/UVB sunblock).
- Bathing/Showering: There are no restrictions on bathing or showering, just be sure to wash/cleanse the treated areas gently with cool to warm water.
Skincare Regimen
Your treating clinician will discuss your current skincare routine with you. They’ll advise you on when you can resume using your regular products and will also recommend specific products to help optimize your treatment outcome and aid in recovery. For enhanced healing, consider purchasing an IPL homecare skincare pack, available at Hamilton Skin Clinic.
Following these aftercare instructions diligently will help ensure you achieve the best possible results from your IPL skin rejuvenation and minimize any potential side effects.
