Hyaluronic Acid Volumisers: Everything You Need to Know

How do so many people appear to stay naturally wrinkle-free, with a youthful volume and glow to their skin?

Volumisers are used to add volume to the face, creating a natural, effortless look. They’re popular with men and women of all ages and they can help slow down the visible aging process and create lush lips, high cheekbones, or to fill in areas of skin where collagen and elasticity have been lost.

Volumisers are an aesthetic medicine treatment that you may have heard of, but what exactly are they? And what do you need to know beforehand?

What Are Hyaluronic Acid Volumisers?

More commonly known as dermal volumisers, hyaluronic acid volumisers are a safe, product used to treat volume loss in the face approved by the Therapeutic Drugs Association (TGA).

Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in our skin, helping keep our skin plump and hydrated. However, as we age, volume loss occurs, and our skin loses its youthful appearance.

By injecting dermal volumisers, you can replenish and rehydrate your skin, adding back the volume you’ve lost through the normal aging process.

They can improve the structure of your face, fill in facial folds and deep wrinkles, and add volume to areas such as cheeks and lips.

Volumisers should always be administered by a trained medical professional. After your initial consultation, the treatment can be done within the hour, followed by minimal downtime.

What Areas Can Volumisers Improve?

Hyaluronic acid in volumisers is used to restore the volume in certain areas of the face.

One of the most popular areas to inject is the lips. Whether you’ve lost volume over time or you just weren’t born with full, pouty lips; volumisers can be used to add height, fullness, and projection to thin lips.

Many of us have naturally thin lips or have thinner lips due to smoking or the aging process. Volumisers work well in this case and can be used in both the top and lower lip.

Cheeks are another popular area to inject. As we age, our fat pads underneath the skin separate, giving our cheeks a sagging or sunken-in appearance, which can prematurely age us beyond our years.

With volumisers, you can create high, sculpted cheekbones, lifting up the skin with youthful volume.

Volumisers are also used to fill in lines created by age, such as smile lines, deep wrinkles. They also work well to revitalize tear troughs, enhance the chin, and to create a more defined border to lips.

How Long Do Volumisers Last? Are they reversible?

Most volumisers last up to a year, with patients often coming in for a touch up around six months after treatment. Volumisers aren’t permanent and can be dissolved if you’re not happy with the outcome.

We have had patients come to us because they went overboard on volumisers. Rather than wait it out for several months or sometimes even a year- we can dissolve the hyaluronic based volumiser and start from scratch. Our goal is to give you a natural looking result, so if you are unhappy with results from hyaluronic acid – based volumisers, we can fix it.

How Are Volumisers Different from Wrinkle Relaxer?

You may have heard about Wrinkle Relaxer, an wrinkle reduction injectable, and are wondering how it compares to volumiser.

Both are popular treatments but have different purposes. Wrinkle relaxers are mainly used to treat wrinkles caused by the movement of muscles in the face, such as those around our eyes and forehead.

The use of Wrinkle Relaxer temporarily stops the muscles from contracting, making the wrinkles go away. Many patients use a combination of both volumisers and wrinkle relaxers to achieve their desired look— it’s safe to administer both in the same appointment.

Is the Treatment Painful?

Cosmetic Nurse Jo and the medical aesthetics team will arrange for you to be numbed topically with numbing cream but all dermal volumiser products have a local anesthetic. This helps reduce pain and make the procedure comfortable.

When Can Do I See Results?

One of the great things about hyaluronic acid volumisers is that results are instant! As soon as the product has been injected, you’ll be able to see the beautiful, smooth results.

Patients love seeing their results right away without having to wait, part of why it’s such a popular and effective cosmetic treatment. You can resume normal activity immediatly after but you will want to wait 24 hours to get in a strenuous workout.

What Are the Side Effects?

Side effects are minimal with volumisers. However, as with any cosmetic treatment, they are possible.

Patients may experience bruising at the injection site, redness, tenderness for a day or so, and itchiness. Swelling is a common side effect as well, especially if the lips have been injected.

It’s best to have volumisers done when you are able to take it easy the next day, as some patients may prefer to stay home while the swelling goes down.
